Summary via Goodreads:

Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage “sci-philes” who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer’s scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends they’re a pack. They are Virals.

I love mystery books (Nancy Drew is definitely the culprit!) and Virals whets my appetite! It’s just so awesome! Until today, I’m still digesting everything I’ve read from the day I started reading it till last Monday night. This is one of those books that I relished each page, taken each words and scene at heart. Also, Virals isn’t just another mystery story, it was also mixed with fantasy and forensic science, oh my God, did I mention how utterly awesome this book is?

I love this book because first and foremost, the plot was perfectly paced and well-written plus Kathy’s writing is so vivid and undeniably engrossing! I just love it! The characters, which are all well-balanced and adorable, is the second thing I love about the story. They’re all relatable and very entertaining! While the main characters, or the “Virals”, are all likable, Tory and Hi are definitely the ones who fall into my favorites. Tory is a very interesting character. I loved her from the start and I keep enjoying her character as the story goes. She’s very smart, intelligent even, snarky and a tough character. Hiram or “Hi” had stolen my heart! He’s so hilarious and his sarcasm was so addictive. There is no dull moment when Hi is around. In short, he makes me HIGH!! But, of course, the gang won’t be complete without Shelton and Ben in it although I was hoping there would be more about Ben on the next book since he’s a bit shady on this one.

The action, mystery and humor in the story are all well-balanced. Reading Virals reminds me of how much I enjoyed Science back in the day and it did rekindle my liking for it. Before reading the book, I was sort of worried that I might get disoriented or confused since I was a bit fresh in reading books that involves forensic science but Kathy made it uncomplicated and easy for her young adult readers to understand so it wasn’t hard to connect with the characters or the story itself.

Overall, I LOVED VIRALS. I’ll never get tired reading this book! It was highly entertaining and educational as well. I’m giving this 5 out of 5 stars and I HIGHLY recommend this to all YA Mystery, Sci-Fi Fantasy buffs out there.

I'm not much of a mystery person, but after reading this review I am definitely rethinking that! Excellent review, this is a book that I will be adding to my TBR list!

You know, I really just didn't enjoy Virals. It didn't stand out to me as anything phenomenal. It's good, but I didn't think it was great. Good review, though!
