Top Twenty Reasons He’s A Slimy Jerk Bastard
To help you get over your train wreck of an EX, I’ve enclosed 20 envelopes. Each one has a reason why Sean is a jerk and not worth the dirt on your shoes. And each one has an instruction for you to do one un-Jessa-like thing a day. NO CHEATING!
Ciao! — C
When Jessa catches her boyfriend, Sean, making out with Natalie “The Boob Job” Stone three days before her drama club’s departure to Italy, she completely freaks.
Stuck with a front-row view of Sean and Natalie making out against the backdrop of a country that oozes romance, Jessa promises to follow all of the outrageous instructions in her best friend’s care package and open her heart to new experiences.
Enter cute Italian boy stage left.
Jessa had prepared to play the role of humiliated ex-girlfriend, but with Carissa directing her life from afar, it’s finally time to take a shot at being a star.
Holy moley! This book is way better than I expected! This book is so awesome that I want to give Kim Culbertson a bear hug!
Now I know how it feels to be infatuated with a book because even though I’ve finished reading this book last week, I’m still thinking about it. Everywhere I go, no matter what I do, the story and characters of this book kept floating behind my mind. And now you think I’m crazy but that’s the effect of Instructions For A Broken Heart on me.
I have LOTS of favorite part on this story so it was really difficult for me to choose just one. But even before I started reading the book, I was really looking forward about the envelopes or the “instructions” for Jessa, the story’s protagonist, like what exactly are written on it, so I was really excited whenever Jessa would open an envelope.
The plot was full of surprises and strongly emotional yet not overly dramatic. Kim Culbertson’s writing was very beautiful, artistically authentic and the way she presented the setting was so real as if I was part of that tour myself and seeing those beautiful scenery and places of Italy. I also felt how miserable and sad and emotionally broken Jessa was. The characters are all charming and very entertaining. I was emotionally invested with the characters most especially Jessa. She’s the very reason why I loved the book! She’s very much worthy of a protagonist, she’s very easy to relate to, she’s independent and smart. Her relationship with her best friends, Carissa and Tyler, was also one of my favorites. Their relationship isn’t perfect, they have misunderstandings, they fight but their love for one another will always top that. There’s a lot of supporting characters or minor ones on the story but they add certain depth and purpose to the story. One of my favorite supporting character is Mr. Campbell, who I almost fell inlove with, and Dylan Thomas with his funny yet sensible comments.
Instructions For A Broken Heart is definitely one of my favorite YA Contemps. I didn’t want the story to end. I desperately want to know what happened next after the ending. Anyway, I’m giving this a strong 5 out of 5 stars and yes, a bear hug for Kim for crafting such beautiful story. I highly recommend this to all YA Contemps fans 🙂
